Transplanting Japanese Weeping Maples

Transplanting Japanese Weeping Maples

This was a very special day. Dorothy is donating some of her specimen Japanese Weeping Maples to me. Masa runs the show in this garden and is directing one of our gardeners (Miguel) on the process. Masa has maintained these two Weeping Maples for decades and knows they are coming to a good home with me.

1. Digging out the root ball

The gardeners have been creating a trench around the root ball for months in preparation for this day. We waited until the end of October when the roots go into dormancy for the final phase and transplanting into my garden. Masa and Miguel have the root ball wrapped in burlap for the migration.

2. Lifting "Precious" (I named the tree)

Masa brings out a large tripod to lift the massive root ball out of the ground.

  • With the Tripod, we used a towing strap hooked to a pulley & chain for lifting the Weeping Maple.
  • Cedar planks are supporting the root ball as it is moved out of the hole.

3. Flight Checked and Ready

Both Weeping Maple trees are out of the garden and ready for loading into the delivery truck.

4. Loading the Maples for Hauling Home

We will use the tripod once again to lift these massive Maple root balls into the truck that will haul these tress to my garden.

Garden Pruning Productions was started with a mission to promote and provide authentic Japanese style gardening. From years as a hobby, we began by rescuing neglected Lace leaf Maples. Soon, word got around and demand began to grow as people with these trees wanted help they could trust.
